If you want something a bit more portable and able to move around your garden if need be, the FlowerHouse greenhouses would be just perfect for you to get.

These greenhouses are very easy for a person to assemble, and you will be able to enjoy gardening and growing fruits and veggies all year round.

With these particular greenhouses- they come in a wide range of sizes and shapes- your plants will be more beautiful, your flowers will be fuller, and your fruits will be plumper and richer because the greenhouse will protect your plants from all kinds of weather.

Seeing that these FlowerHouse greenhouses come in different sizes, and even in different shapes then the usual ones, you must determine what your particular need is.

These greenhouses are rather like strong tents that you can move around the garden at your will. But, don’t let the word “tent” turn you off, because these greenhouses can hold their own against the elements and this really is one of the best greenhouse manufacturers out there.

You can have fruits and veggies to eat even when the weather says otherwise.

Let’s see the different versions of the FlowerHouse greenhouses and you will then be able to choose which one would be just right for your plant growing.

Remember also that it needs to be able to fit in your yard, so choose the size carefully. And, don’t forget, you won’t need any tools to aid you in setting them up.

The FlowerHouse Bloom House Portable Greenhouse is a uniquely shaped greenhouse that will make an interesting addition to your garden.

For those gardeners who enjoy a sense of flexibility with their outdoor gardening space, this particular greenhouse is a good choice because of those factors.

It is easy to put together and can be moved around the yard just as easily depending on the season. It is made out of a material that won’t decay after rain or sun.

It has a zippered door and 8 zippered windows so that your plants will be protected from birds and insects. It has good air circulation and it gives a tropical environment for the plants which love the heat.

The FlowerHouse Portable Conservatory Small Greenhouse is an elegant option for gardeners. It has a Victorian beauty and charm, but built with modern, weatherproof materials.

You can either plant right on the earth in the ground- because the bottom is open- or you can use it to cover shelves of decorative plants. It can be your own, mini Garden of Eden.

This greenhouse is like a classic structure from a past era, and you can even add some chairs and use it as a nice, private get away. This one also comes with a zippered door and seven zippered windows. Also, there are plant hooks for hanging plant baskets.

There are many other greenhouses brands, but these two particular FlowerHouse greenhouses are some of the best of their kind. These make excellent homes for your plants, and even a sacred place for you to just go and unwind.

How to Find A Perfect Wood Greenhouse Building Plan

There are many different kinds of greenhouse designs. There are wood greenhouses, metal, as well as a variety of hybrids. You can really make a basic greenhouse out of some PVC tubing and clear plastic sheeting, but that is another subject. One of the most popular is the wood frame greenhouse.

If you want to find wood greenhouse plans for building homemade DIY wooden greenhouses, your best bet is to go online.

There are literally hundreds of different websites offering a variety of different greenhouse plans, but not all of these are the same. Some are free, others you have to pay for the plans. The biggest dilemma is finding the right one for your needs.

It is a good idea to start by considering the size of the greenhouse you want.

While many people are not looking to start their own greenhouse business, they want one that is large enough to grow starter plants, or to be able to extend the growing season as much as possible.

Here are some things to look for when it comes to plans for wood greenhouses.

One of the biggest is that the plan should have not just complete, easy to follow instructions, but also include a list of materials you will need, as well as any special tools besides what you might already own.

It should also give you a choice between glass panels and Plexiglass, which is more lightweight and less dangerous to use that glass.

Good plans for wood greenhouses will also include helpful tips and information on buying the materials, you will need to build your ultimate greenhouse.

For an example, while wood is a good material to work with, there are some flaws.

One of them is wood is more susceptible to the weather as well as bugs.

You need treated wood, one that is insect as well as weather resistant.

When you are buying the wood you need, you have to make sure it’s treated lumber.

Location is also a big factor in building wood greenhouses, or really any other type of greenhouse design.

A plan should help you find the right spot in your back yard, with plenty of sun throughout the day.

Any and all greenhouse plans should also offer downloaded information, so you can get started right away, and if it’s a pay site, they should have a hard copy they can send out to you as well.

Another thing about pay sites is that you shouldn’t spend more than thirty dollars on any plan, and these sites should offer more than one plan for the money.

In addition to finding the right plans for wood greenhouses, there are a few important tips you can use.

One of them is that no matter where you decide to build your greenhouse, you need to contact your local utility company, phone as well as cable provider.

Have them come out and inspect the area you are going to construct your greenhouse to make sure there are not buried lines. This will save you hassles down the road.

You also need to decide if you want a permanent foundation, or set the greenhouse on bare land.

While this is cheaper, a foundation has the advantage of walking on a smooth level surface, and prevents problems with weeds, and insects getting under the frame.

Finally, visit the wood greenhouse plans from Mini Greenhouse Kits, they always provide excellent tutorials on how to build any type of homemade greenhouse kit.

There are many container gardening tips that you can find over the Internet and in books, newsletters and magazines.

Indeed, such is the popularity of container gardening that many people are now looking into the many ways to combine gardening with recycling via this method of plant cultivation.

Choose the Right Garden Containers

Since the plants will be contained in a relatively limited space, you have to ensure that there will be sufficient room for the plants to grow. Thus, you have to consider the size of the plant once mature as well as its growing habits. Decorative garden planters may sometimes get in the way of growth, but only if you have purchased a poor quality container.

For example, you will need a sturdy base for upright growers and a deep container for sprawling plants.

Also, it is important to maintain symmetry and balance between the plants and their container.

The general rule is that the height of the plants should not be more than twice the height of their container and the width of the plants is not more than half the width of the container.

You will find that in terms of aesthetics, this is the most important of all container gardening tips.

It is, however, acceptable to fill the container’s diameter just as long as the plants’ roots will be able to move downward.

Of course, choosing the right containers also means choosing the right plants. In this regard, it is advisable to group plants requiring the same amount of care in terms of soil structure, water and sunlight as well as fertilizers.

Also avoid planting aggressive varieties of plants that can quickly overpower the other cultivars. Instead, opt for the dwarf varieties that will provide the same sense of enjoyment without the responsibility of caring for larger plants.

Provide Good Drainage

Drainage is very important in container gardening as waterlogged soil will lead to plant rot and death.

Good drainage is easily provided for by ensuring that holes are present at the bottom of the container and then covered with a 1 to 2-inch thick layer of small gravel rocks.

If you are using a non-drilled decorative pot, you can use a smaller plastic pot to cultivate the plant in. Then, place said plastic pot into the decorative pot, which makes it easier to just throw away the excess water and soil on the latter but leave the plant intact in its plastic pot.

Follow Soil Requirements

Yet another one of the most important container gardening tips is the use of potting soil, never garden soil.

This is because potting soil has been sterilized of its microbes and pests, thus, protecting the plants from infection and contamination early on.

Plus, the mix of nutrients significantly contributes to good plant growth while the mix of vermiculite, peat and perlite makes for good drainage. Potting soil is very affordable, anyway, so it should not be a problem on your pockets.

As for fertilizing, you must regularly fertilize the soil since it does not come into contact with the ground where additional nutrients can be secured.

This also goes for your plants’ water needs as their roots cannot extend into the ground to search for subsurface water. Always check the soil’s moisture content.

These container gardening tips can be said to be common sense.

Then again, buying garden containers does not require a degree in rocket science so common sense is but logical.

Hydroponic Gardening is the art of gardening indoors without using any soil.

Hydroponic Gardening is the cultivation of plants in water. This is done by using peat or bark. It helps to eliminate unwanted diseases that begin in the soil.

Hydroponic plants grow much faster and healthier than soil-grown plants.

One reason for this is that the medium is sterile, and the plants do not have to grow roots in a wide, deep fashion in order to look for water. The roots can grow straight down a few inches to get its nourishment.

This makes Hydroponic Gardening ideal because it takes less space to grow; and the plants yield an earlier harvest.

Growing plants this way allows water and nutrients to be applied directly to the roots of each plant.

Find out what is greenhouse hydroponics and consider purchasing a greenhouse under $500 to start growing professionally or commercially.

The good thing is that the water can be reused because there is no loss of water due to evaporation. The lighting is also a very important item in Hydroponic Gardening. The difference between using soil and using water as a base is with water or hydroponics, a person will see between a 100 to 400% increase in the growth of the plants.

Although fluorescent lights can be used they are not as good as high-pressure sodium lights. Florescent lights tend to produce smaller plants with weaker stems. However, they are great for producing seedlings. Plant grow lights will work much better than regular fluorescent lights.

A digital timer is used to turn the lights on and off every 12 hours. This also tells the plants that the days are shorter and they will produce its harvest twice as fast as a normal 24-hour period.

Consider buying hydroponic grow lights to increase plant growth rates and overall plant healthiness.

If you are providing the plants necessary food and water the plants can spend more time producing leaves and fruits than they would if they had to spread their roots searching for these things in soil bases.

If you have limited to no extra growing space, read the article Portable Water Gardening Tips, for the space challenged persons.

The art of Hydroponic Gardening is easy and simple if the basic principles are met.

You can use tap water or distilled water although distilled water works much better.

Fill the top of a reservoir container with water ¾ of an inch from the top. This reservoir should hold several pots for the roots and plant.

It will also need to be at least six inches deep.

Keep an eye on the plants progress, checking the pH of the water, and never allow the water level to get below 5 inches from the bottom of the reservoir.

However, the plants will still grow with less water.

You can adjust the pH up or down as it is needed. Improper pH balance along with over feeding the plants can cause unhealthy plants.

It is much better to feed the plants less nutrients than to give them too much.

The reservoir should also include a drain plug for changing the water if it is necessary, while cleaning any undesirable elements out of the reservoir.

Shop and buy hydroponics growing systems that is worth every penny, like the world famous AeroGrow AeroGarden or Botanicare products.

Most any garden owner will be envious of a beautiful grass green lawn. But the problem is that lots of people who have back yards simply don’t have the time and money these days to keep them up. It takes money and sweat to keep a lawn looking plush and healthy nowadays.

There was a time when only people who had enough money to pay for professional landscapers and gardeners could afford to enjoy a fresh green lawn. So with all the costs and effort involved, it’s no wonder people are ready for a new and better way. This brings them to the artificial grass option, which has really come on to be the wave of the future.

But it’s only here recently that it really caught fire. It used to be used mainly for sporting arenas. But now its uses have really expanded, and home owners themselves are taking a hard long look at artificial grass, and they obviously like what they see. Even those who could always afford the gardeners and landscapers before, as seeing the wisdom behind investing in artificial grass. The up-front cost may seem a bit steep, but once you look further into it, it’s very easy to see the savings as a result of using it.

The savings come at you from various angles. One is in the area of water. A natural surface requires a lot of watering at certain times of the year, as well as insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, weed killers, lawn mower gas, and if you have them, gardeners. Plus they are very effected by the weather. But not artificial lawns. They take the weather and remain looking great, and year round. So you always have a great looking yard in spite of what the weather has been.

With the artificial grass, you have none of the problems and concerns mentioned above. All the work and worry have been taken out of the equation. That explains the popularity explosion of artificial grass. It’s practical and easier to have. They free up a lot of your time for focusing on other things that may need attention around your home. Just think of the hours spent doing all the things we talked about above.

If you own a garden, you have several options when choosing the type of artificial grass you want. There are various types for various applications. You just have to find what best suits your needs. They are easily installed and add substantial value to your property. Here are just a couple of the ways this type of grass can benefit you:

Comfort – This grass is so much like the real grass, it’s hard to differentiate between the two. But with artificial turf, there is a rubber fitting that lies just underneath the greens that provides added comfort to the feet. This adds a safety factor for rambunctious kids, with less slipping and less tripping, reducing the amount of injuries.

Durability – The durability is one of the best features of this grass. It holds its beautiful color in spite of the traffic amount or weather poundings it takes. The drainage systems makes it usable almost immediately after showers, unlike natural surfaces that hold water and need to dry out for some hours. Being worry-free, it lowers your stress. You don’t have to worry about caring for your lawn like you once did, or keep a constant check on it to ensure it’s in good shape. You’ll be surrounded by lush green grass all year round.

How can we conserve energy at home and in our garden offices and other domestic buildings?

There has been much talk about renewable energy and new technologies such as ground source heat pumps and grey water recycling for use around the home. Most new domestic technologies are still in the development stage, and have twenty or thirty year pay-back periods.

A wind turbine in the garden would suffer from limited wind speed in urban areas, needs planning permission, and unless 2 or 3 metres in span produces very little electricity. However, if you live on the top of a hill in Scotland a wind turbine is a good idea. Solar panels for generating hot water are worth considering, and are cost effective on your house rather than on your garden office.

The investment in new technologies is definitely worthwhile personally and globally if you are building a new house or if you intend to live in your home for life. But there are simple measures that all of us can take in our homes and our garden offices to help reduce our carbon footprint.

So what are the simplest and fastest ways of reducing energy consumption in a new garden office, granny flat and in our homes?
Here’s an energy check list below: -

1. High levels of insulation. Is your loft insulated? Have you got cavity wall insulation in the house? Have you got building regulation levels of insulation in your garden office to help balance your carbon footprint?
2. In a larger garden offfice you could heat with a woodburning stove. Woodburners burn efficiently and the resulting ash can be compsted or spread straight onto your garden.
3. Double glazing. Have all the rooms in your house, including your garden office, got double glazing?
4. When choosing new domestic appliances and garden office equipment ask for an energy rating. Don’t leave any electrical equipment on stand-by. [Plasma TVs use more electricity than traditional televisions.]
5. Building materials. Have the building materials in your new extension, loft conversion or garden office been manufactured in the UK to reduce carbon miles and do the manufacturers care about their carbon footprint? Do they recycle, how do they fuel their manufacturing plant?
6. Small but effective measures are energy saving light-bulbs. Washing your clothes at 30 degrees. Walking!

Over 25% of the UK’s CO2 emissions come from inadequate insulation in domestic buildings.
Many garden office suppliers are building offices using SIPS panels which are made from a thin layer of plastic insulation sandwiched between two sheets of OSB. This means that air cannot circulate and condensation and mould will form unless you use air-conditioning and as we all know, air conditioning is costly to the pocket as well as the environment.

There are no Government insulation or building standards for smaller garden offices. This means that badly constructed and inadequately insulated buildings are being supplied as garden offices.

With the world’s increasing concern about climate change, many garden offices are built to consume less energy and reduce their contribution to global warming. For example, walls that are 200mm thick, ceilings 310mm thick and floors 255mm thick. All are filled with double layers of insulation and designed and checked with government approved software to ensure that condensation cannot form within the building or the walls.

Over 25% of the UK’s CO2 emissions come from inadequate insulation in domestic buildings. To further cut down on CO2 emissions, eco-friendly insulation can be put into a garden office. These eco-friendly materials have been manufactured using as little energy and chemicals, and as much recycling, as possible. Two examples are below: -

1. Rockwool.
• Rockwool a mineral fibre insulation that is manufactured using as much recycled material as possible. The Rockwool factory in South Wales heats its own offices using waste heat from the manufacturing process. Rockwool won the Wales Environmental Award in 2002 and continually strives to reduce its energy and water consumption.
2. Thermafleece Sheep’s wool insulation.
• Thermafleece insulation is manufactured from the wool of British hill sheep. The manufacturing process uses little energy and the resulting eco-friendly insulation is a natural, low allergy, breathable material.

There are many types of hedge serving different purposes, we have a very wide selection of hedging plants available and there are a number of factors to consider when choosing. The information further down on this page may help you choose but please call or e-mail if you are not sure. Links to further information on the main groups of hedging plants and the most popular hedges we sell may be found on the left and right hand menus.

HEDGE VERSUS FENCE AND WALL?
Hedges, Fences and walls can all serve similar purposes – marking and maintaining boundaries, keeping children or pets contained or to provide a greater sense of privacy. It is fair to say we are a little biased! But here are some good reasons for choosing a hedge.Hedges have greater ‘kerbside appeal’ offering beauty and interest in all seasons while softening the lines of buildings making houses look more in keeping with their gardens. Hedges reduce strong wind by filtering them, solid fences and walls cause greater turbulence. Well grown prickly hedges provide better security than a fence or wall. Hedges filter dust, pollution and noise. A well maintained hedge will last hundreds of years, longer than any fence or most walls and at a fraction of the cost. Hedges provide a better quality of privacy, fences and high walls can give a sense of imprisonment. Hedges provide shelter and food for wildlife and are environmentally friendly.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A HEDGE
‘Which plant makes the best hedge’?…one of the most common questions asked. The answer is a matter of both personal taste and the growing environment (soil, climate etc) in your garden.
It can be helpful to look around to see the hedges that do well in nearby gardens with similar conditions to your own. We are very happy to identify and match any mystery hedge you might like, just e-mail a photo or post a few leaves with your name and phone number.

These are some of the more important points to consider when choosing a hedge:
SITE AND SOIL
A newly planted hedge will need to thrive in its environment to grow and develop. Most hedges will grow in any reasonable soil but some have dislike of extreme conditions, for example Beech and Yew hate boggy wet conditions, Photinias and Pittosporum may suffer damage in very cold exposed gardens. All of this information may be found in the pages of our website and catalogue but please call or e-mail if you are not sure.

FUTURE MAINTENANCE. Fast growing hedges will cover quickly giving privacy and screening in the shortest time. Often there are situations where fast growth is of prime importance but these vigorous hedges will require more frequent clipping in future years. There is often a strong case for using less vigorous hedging plants for example planting a Thuja hedge instead of Leylandii.

TOXICITY AND SAFETY. Parts of some hedging plants are poisonous or may be very thorny making them unsuitable for some situations especially if you have young children.
ROOT DAMAGE. The roots of some more vigorous hedging species have the potential to damage drains, driveways and foundations if planted close by. Professional advice (e.g. structural engineer) should be sought and followed if you think this might be an issue.

PERSONAL CHOICE AND BUDGET. With the issues above covered you may have a ‘shortlist’ of suitable hedges. All that remains is to choose your favourite (or the plant you dislike the least!) and choose the size that best suits your budget.

Below are details about the many different types of hedge and some recommendations of suitable hedging plants for these purposes which you may find useful but please call or e-mail us if you have any questions.

BOUNDARY HEDGES
Boundary hedges are by far the most practical way of marking the limits of your plot containing pets/children and keeping out unwanted visitors while adding character and value to your property. Boundary hedging is not just cheaper than a fence or wall, it will be longer lasting and a more effective filtering barrier to wind and noise. A hedge will provide a higher quality of privacy bringing a sense of seclusion to your garden.

There are many hedge species suitable for boundary hedging. The photo shows a Leylandii hedge in the background with an English Yew hedge in front. Many other hedge species are suitable for boundary hedges for example Laurel, Privet, Beech, Hornbeam and Thuja. All of these hedges are either leaf retaining or evergreen therefore providing year round privacy.

SECURITY HEDGES
Security hedges will often perform similar functions as boundary hedging but with a greater priority placed in keeping out intruders. While many species will provide security, hedging plants with thorns will always be the most effective deterrent. While they are undoubtedly more hostile many of these hedge plants may also provide a beautiful living tapestry of colour for much of the year.

Faster growing evergreen security hedging plants include Pyracantha (in the photo) together with Berberis Darwinii and Berberis Stenophylla, Hollies will also make an excellent prickly hedge albeit more slowly. Suitable deciduous hedging species include Quickthorn, Blackthorn and most Roses. A mixture of plants can be equally effective, Mixed Native hedges are excellent for security as are simpler mixes such as Hornbeam and Quickthorn which combined are prickly and leaf retaining for winter.

Winter Tips to Remember as a Gardener

Although winter may seem like a time when you can’t enjoy DIY gardening, you’ll actually find that there are a lot of gardening things that you can do during the winter time.

As a gardener, there are many things you should be doing before winter hits and as the winter begins. Here are some winter tips you need to remember as a gardener. Making gardening a family affair is always a good idea as well.

Top Gardening Advice for Growing Throughout the Winter Season

Tip #1 – Do you have any strawberry plants? After they go dormant during the winter, it is important that you mulch them. This way you keep them from getting any damage during the winter. This also helps you make sure you get berries that are cleaner when they produce again.

Tip #2 – As long as the ground has not frozen already, you can go ahead and plant your bulbs for spring. Often you can get some great sales late in the season and if you get these planted during the winter, you can have a beautiful landscape to look forward to in the spring. Successfully planting a winter garden is not that difficult, you can do this!

Tip #3 – Before the deep freezes set in during the winter, give any shrubs and evergreens a good watering at the roots. Trees that are thirsty during the winter are more likely to end up with winter damage. You can prevent that damage by doing a good watering.

Tip #4 – If you have ornamental grasses, wait until early spring or very late in the winter to cut them back. These grasses will provide great food sources for birds. The foliage will give you more interest in the garden and will bring in many birds to your garden area as well.

Solve Miniature Green House Structure Problems Before Disaster Strikes

The beauty of a portable greenhouse is that you can play God, in a manner of speaking.

You can control the heat, humidity and air circulation in the green house so as to encourage the best growth in your plants.

All these even when the weather outside is not conducive to the Garden of Eden!

However, the same mini greenhouse that provides protection to your plants can also become their death house. More often than not, this happens when you fail to solve the small problems that inevitably crop up on a weekly, even daily, basis. You will just wake up one day to realize that your greenhouse is beyond saving and, hence, you must start anew.

Well, why let disaster happen when you can easily solve the problems as soon as you see them?

Easy Grow 6' x 8' Hobby Greenhouse

Tips for Growing in Backyard Structures

Keep an Eye on Temperature
Each plant variety grown during a certain planting season requires a different range of temperature in order to flourish. Plus, you also need to consider the fact that each stage of plant development also requires another set of temperature ranges. This is where your research comes in.

In general, however, rion hobby greenhouses should be kept at a temperature not above 85 degrees Celsius. Above that temperature and you might as well place your plants on a pressure cooker to die.

Thus, you have to install passive vents, fans with timers, and active coolers that allow the cool air to rush in and the hot air to be driven out during the hottest part of the day and vice versa during the coolest part of the night.

It may sound like plenty of work but in time, you should be able to maintain just the right temperature.

Get a Feel for Humidity

Admittedly, humidity will not disable your plants as quickly and effectively as heat will but it can lead to plant death, too. Skipping the technicalities, too much dampness in the plants and the surrounding air will stunt growth as well as encourage the entry of pests and diseases.

You have to water the plants if and when necessary only.

Be very sure that there are no pools of water lying around that will contribute to an increase in humidity via evaporation. Plus, the same passive vents that prevent significant increases in heat come in handy in humidity control, too.

Plant House 3 Greenhouse

Be on the Lookout for Air Circulation within the Structure

This is connected to maintaining the right temperature and humidity levels.

The pattern is such that when the air is stagnant, the levels of humidity and temperature builds up until such time that diseases and pests thrive and the plants die.

To counteract said air stagnation, it is very important to provide for passive vents and fans, which are also very important in temperature control.

Today, models like the small greenhouse brand line from FlowerHouse, they made the most affordable and long lasting kits.

You should also sacrifice some plants that may have overgrown its boundaries so as to provide pockets of air in the surrounding area.

Basic 300 Juliana

Fanatic About Garden Pests

Perhaps more than anything else, you have to be very vigilant against pests including weeds.

On a daily basis, you should perform spot checks on plant groups from the buds to the undersides of leaves to the intersection of the stems and stalks.

It is hard work but it is well worth the effort.

Ultimately, your greenhouse will become the haven of protection for your plants that you envision it to be.

One of the best things about container gardening is that you can be as creative as you want with the containers you can use. Just put your mind to work, find old containers for recycling and voila!

You have containers worthy to place a part of Mother Nature in. Here then are cleaver ideas for turning ordinary, old containers around the house into extraordinary beautiful containers with new uses.

Clever Ideas for Containers in Gardening

Toolboxes
Yes, indeed, the old toolboxes that your husband or father discarded in favor of newer ones has new lives! You can turn the old toolboxes into cute planters for your herbs and blooms. You may even just let the handles remain just so you can easily transport them from one windowsill to another as well as to add a cute touch to the whole setup.

However, it is best to use redwood or cedar materials since these kinds resist rotting. If you must settle for soft woods, then apply the appropriate preservative to lengthen their lives. Just make sure not to use chemically-treated wood as it can kill the beneficial microorganisms present in the soil.

Or you may even use the toolboxes as just holders of the pots upon which the plants are directly cultivated in. Make sure to line the inside of the toolboxes with sphagnum moss before setting the pots inside.

Troughs
Old-fashioned troughs make for beautiful additions to the garden. You might say that it is a dream of many gardeners to be complimented on the creative uses in the garden of such utilitarian containers. You can use the troughs for slow-growing plants as well as alpine blooms.

To transform a trough into a container for gardening purposes, the following steps are highly recommended:

    * Make a drainage hole at the lowest point of the trough.
* Cover this hole with either a piece of screen or pot shards.
* Mix the potting soil, which consists of equal mix fine-grain gravel and medium rich potting mix. These materials can be purchased at garden supply centers. Don’t use garden soil.
* Arrange the plants in the resulting bed, said plants of which can include thyme, viola, moss and sedum, to name a few.
* Cover the soil with a ¼-inch pea gravel.
* Place the trough where the plants can receive the maximum amount of sunlight.

You can even decorate the trough for more effect. For example, rocks around the garden trough will make for a Japanese Zen effect.

Wheelbarrows
Instead of throwing away your old wheelbarrows with the holes in them, you should make them into containers for a mini garden. This way, you can create a focal point in your garden without spending money at all.

To experiment with the wheelbarrow, you can place a variety of potted plants until you have achieved the desired effect. You may even paint the wheelbarrow in a complementing shade so as to achieve a painter’s feel to the set-up.

There are other old containers just lying around your house and tool shed that can be recycled to make new, pretty containers for your garden.

Just to name a few more, you have old baskets, old plastic jugs and even old plastic boxes. Now, set your imagination to work, beautify your garden and save Mother Nature from more trash.

If you have heard about the health benefits of green tea on your body, then you will likely appreciate the goodness of compost tea on your plants and garden soil.

Both are prepared the same way, too – steeping in water until the goodness of the hummus or the leaves are extracted into the resulting liquid.

The Goodness of Compost Tea

Compost Tea Defined

Basically, compost tea is liquid produced by extracting the beneficial organisms such as bacteria, fungi and nematodes as well as in leaching the soluble nutrients like nitrogen from the prepared compost.

The emphasis is on ready compost as making tea out of partially decomposed materials will cause harm instead of good for the soil and the plants.

Compost Tea Benefits

Your efforts in making compost tea are well worth the benefits derived from them, which include:

Improved plant growth because the compost tea protects the surfaces with good organisms. Thus, pests and diseases are prevented from attacking the plants.

Improved soil structure due to the increase of nutrients as well as the reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers.

Improved nutrient absorption from the soil into the plant because of the increased amounts of nutrients in the soil as well as the lack of pests.

Lesser need for the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides mainly because of the increased nutrient uptake and the decreased presence of pests.

Lesser water loss as the soil itself is better at holding on to the water. As a result, you also save on your water bills.

As you will observe, the benefits of using these compost gardening tips are interrelated and interconnected. Again, think of drinking your green tea for comparison purposes.

Compost Tea Production

The creation of compost tea is very simple despite its many benefits. That’s the beauty of making your own compost tea instead of buying ready-made products from the garden supply store.

You simply take an old bucket with no holes in it but with its tight-fitting lid still in place.

Place the ready compost about two-thirds of the way of the bucket’s rim, pour water until the rim and then replace the lid.

Just be sure that the lid is neither screwed too tightly as to prevent the gases from escaping nor too loosely as to allow pests to make their way into the mixture.

You will then leave the bucket for 2-3 weeks depending on how well you want the tea to mature.

Plus, the compost tea will ferment by itself, much like fermenting beer.

The compost bucket will leach into the water, thus, producing an ugly brown liquid.

It looks ugly but it is definitely one of the most beautiful things in the world for your plants and garden soil.

However, you should never use the compost tea in its pure concentration lest your plants die in the process. Instead, you should dilute it with water in a 10 parts to 1 part of tea ratio.

And the best thing about making compost tea?

You can actually use the compost for more tea brewing albeit the water used should be lesser in quantity with each passing fermentation process. When no more goodness can be extracted from the compost, you can just throw it back into the compost pile or compost bin and the process begins again.

Things to Know About Soil Composting Accelerators

It has been said many times that composting is the best way to secure organic fertilizer. However, it can be a slow process taking weeks at a time to produce the desired black gold from the composted materials. This is where compost accelerators can be of assistance to the gardener.

What It Is
Simply put, a compost accelerator is any material that speeds up the rate at which the process of decomposition occurs. Keep in mind that the compost itself already has microorganisms like fungi and bacteria that aid in the composting process.

However, adding in composting accelerators makes the process work more quickly under the right circumstances.

What Are the Types of Composting Accelerator?

You can purchase compost accelerators from garden supply stores, which can come in either powder or liquid form.

Usually, these compost accelerators come with instructions so it should be easy to apply them to the existing compost pile.

You can also use special types of worms as compost accelerators.

Again, these worms can be purchased in garden supply stores, which can include red wrigglers, European night crawlers and blueworms. Common earthworms are generally not recommended for this purpose.

You may also use natural compost accelerators available in your home and garden. Good soil is the best natural compost accelerator because of the beneficial microorganisms already present in them. Just work a few shovels into compost piles or compost bins, preferably soil from underneath trees or soil found in the woods.

Other natural compost accelerators include manure, straw, unpasteurized beer, nettles, seaweed and nettles.

Just make sure to remove any salt from the seaweed as it can adversely affect the composition of the compost pile.

What Determines Its Success
Lest you think that compost accelerators will make for faster and better compost, think again. There are certain criteria in order to make the addition of the accelerators a success in every which way possible.

These conditions include:
* The compost itself must be of good quality. Thus, the materials in it are of the good kind, the moisture and air are in sufficient levels and the container itself is conducive to composting.
* Proper handling and turning of the compost pile is exercised. For example, you should never handle it when it is not yet ready.
* The weather itself is conducive to the addition of the compost accelerator. For example, it is not advisable to place compost accelerator in winter because decomposition is slower during cool weather.

You may want to have hummus as soon as possible. It is often better to just let Mother Nature perform most of the work with a little help from you. And if you do see that the compost pile you started is not healthy, it is best to just start all over again instead of trying to salvage the heap with an accelerator.

In conclusion, a compost accelerator is a good thing to have in your compost heap.

However, we highly advise using it in the right manner so as to get the most benefits. After all, Mother Nature turns everything to soil eventually and it will work on your compost heap whether you like it or not.

So you have a need to keep plants in your backyard. That is actually quite common, and that is why garden greenhouses were invented. It sounds complicated, but don’t worry, greenhouses come in easy to use kits that can be put together on the spot. There are a few things that you will need to do when you get your greenhouse, so pay attention.

Learn About Hoop Greenhouses & Hoop Houses

First of all you need to make sure you’re near a constant source of water, then you need to check to see how the wind is. Greenhouses are lightweight and can be adversely effected by wind, and this is especially true when you are using hoop houses. But what exactly is a hoop house?

A hoop house is a bit different from a greenhouse kit.

Instead of using an A Frame, it uses a series of half hoops that are covered by plastic sheeting. What is the purpose of this? Essentially it is to keep the climate constant within the sheeting.

There are many areas in the world where the temperature has a lot of trouble staying the same, which means you might have crops or other vegetables that need to be kept at a certain temperature.

For this you will need an electric heater of some type, but your hoop green house will not need a foundation. Though this sounds simple, you need to make sure you follow the instructions for setting it up. There is warranty information that needs to be followed to the letter unless you purchased a used greenhouse, in which case you would not need to be concerned with the warranty.

Be sure to properly anchor your tubing into the ground. It is not recommended that you anchor them in concrete unless you are certain you will never be moving the green house. More than likely you will want to pipe some water into the greenhouse so that you can take care of your plants easily.

Maintaining a greenhouse is fairly easy, especially one of this type.

All you will need to do is periodically wipe down the polycarbonate sheeting and make sure the tubes are clean. Generally you will not need to replace anything, and the most common issue might be cracks it the polycarbonate. In that case you will simply have to replace it.

It might seem troublesome at first, but having a hoop greenhouse on your property will go a long way in the future.

It will keep your crops growing all year round, regardless of your region. You can sure imagine the benefits of this. Being able to sell crops all the time is surely an opportunity that you cannot pass up.

So look into getting a greenhouse kit today, and see what a world of difference it makes for you tomorrow.

Pests can destroy your garden in no time and many gardeners reach right for pesticides to keep them at bay!

Only you can keep your garden pest free and pesticide free by using some of these great tips for organic vegetable gardening pest control.

There is a lot of concern these days about pesticides, chemicals and other toxins getting into our food. This concern has led many people to go green and start growing their own gardens.

However, if you are like many gardeners there comes a time when you have to deal with pests.

Tip #1: Keep in mind some pests actually help your garden.

Some of the bugs in your garden are not doing any harm. In fact, some bugs eat other bugs or keep other bugs away so they can’t come and ruin your garden.

One such beneficial bug is the ladybug. A ladybug is a natural pesticide that will protect your garden, so if you see them just let them be.

Tip #2: Invite birds into your garden.

Birds eat bugs, so if you can get them to frequent your garden then you will get the benefit of natural pest control.

You can attract birds by having a birdbath or a bird feeder in your garden.

You can even plant sunflowers which will also help to attract birds into your garden.

Tip #3: Use barriers to prevent pests from damaging your garden.

A barrier, such as a net, that you put over your plants to keep bugs at bay. The net will still allow the plants to get the sunlight and water they need, but keep pests away. Make sure that whatever barrier you use will still allow the plant to get sun and water.

Tip #4: Hand pick off bugs when you can.

While it may seem time consuming, some bugs are actual rather easy to hand pick off. Bugs like slugs can easily be picked off, dropped in some soapy water and they will no longer be a bother.

Tip #5: Plant plants that work as natural pesticides.

Many plants actually repel pests. Tobacco is a great option. You can plant tobacco around your vegetable garden and soil compost bin it makes a great barrier against pests.

Tip #6: Use organic pest sprays.

If your attempts at natural pest control have not worked good enough, then you can try organic pest sprays. There are quite a few recipes that you can mix up at home with ingredients that you probably have on hand. A mix of oil and water can work very well to keep pests away.

Organic pest control is essential when you want to protect your family against toxins that are so prevalent in foods today.

By growing your own garden and using organic pest control methods, you will finally be able to grow healthy foods for your family and know that they are completely safe.

In addition, organic gardening and pest control is better for the environment and better for all living things.

You won’t be polluting the soil or the air with harmful toxins when you use organic pest control methods.
