Rock Garden Tips

Can gardens include more than plants and soil? That’s definitely true when you create a rock garden.

Whether you have an angled rock formation in your yard, or simply want to add some depth to a flat yard, you can give your yard a facelift by creating an attractive rock garden. Here are some tips to make it happen:

1. Size matters.

This isn’t to say that bigger is necessarily better. But you should define the area that you want to include the rock garden in. If you decide on small garden, then you should do more with less-focus on making the area as eye-catching as possible. On the other hand, if you put your rock garden in a larger space, then focus on creating a naturalistic, expansive, rock garden. One important matter you should definitely consider when choosing the size of your future rock garden, is how much maintenance you’re willing to do. As you might guess, large rock gardens will require much more maintenance. So if you don’t have the time, endurance, or patience to maintain a large rock garden, then you should consider building a smaller one instead.

2. Create a solid foundation.

When you create such gardens, it’s crucial that you create a solid “foundation” of soil and rocks on the ground.

Rock gardens are typically higher than the ground surrounding them.

That will make it much easier to create the higher levels of the rock garden.

3. Color counts.

When creating a rock garden, the number of color combinations is virtually unlimited. The color schemes that you want to include in your garden will influence the type of rocks and plants that it contains. Start with the hue of the rocks. Include plants with a touch of the same color as the rocks, or a color that complements that color.

4. Choose the right rocks.

The rocks are the essence of the garden, and will create different effects. It’s important that the rocks have a uniform color and texture. Also, choose softer rocks if you want to create a look that’s natural and worn.

5. Make it yourself to get a workout.

It’s highly likely that your rock garden will include some huge and heavy rocks. Sure, you could spend an arm and a leg to have a contractor do the work for you. But there’s something to be said for building it yourself. Not only will you have the satisfaction of building a garden, but it can also give your back a great workout. So as long as your doctor allows it, roll up your sleeves and lift with your back!

6. Save money on rocks.

The best way to save money on rocks is to get freebies at construction sites (make sure to ask first), or to buy them at rock quarries. These sources can provide outstanding rocks at a low cost.

If you want to create a garden that’s different from the run-of-the-mill fruit and veggie garden that most homeowners create, then consider a rock garden. They rock!
