Container Gardening Tips and Tricks for Beginner and Novice Gardeners
With container gardening, you can do gardening without a “garden”! As you might guess, it involves placing plants in a group of containers (such as pots), rather than in the soil.
If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, here are some tips to help you create the perfect container garden:
1. Think about the elements.
This involves a wide variety of factors. How much sun does a certain plant need? Will the area be safe from flooding and wind? How close is the faucet to the potted plants? These are all important issues, since they’ll help to ensure that your plants get what they need, yet are safe from the wrath of Mother Nature. As an alternative, you could keep your container garden indoors. But if you choose that option, then take into consideration the average temperature in the room, as well as the amount of sunlight it gets.
2. Start out slowly.
While it may seem appealing to launch your container garden using exotic plants, it’s advisable that you start with plants that you’re already familiar with.
The reason is that you’ll already be familiar with growing such plants, so creating your garden will be easier. Afterwards, you can gradually start adding plants that you’re less familiar with, or ones that are more challenging to grow. If you’re just starting out, you should also consider including annuals rather than perennials, in your garden.
3. Choose your containers wisely.
Containers are the essence of container gardening, so it’s important to be selective when picking them. What should you look for in a container? While you should definitely consider both the form and function of the container, this should be in terms of how well it complements the plant. Some important characteristics to consider are the material, size, and shape of the container. Particular ones match up better with certain types of plants, so do some experimentation to find the right container for the right plant.
Besides matching up the container with the plant, you should also consider the location of the container garden. Will it be indoors or outdoors? Will it be formal or informal? What are the color schemes surrounding the garden? All of these issues are crucial when choosing containers for your plants.
4. Use the right gardening tools.
As with any other type of gardening, when container gardening it’s crucial that you have the right tool for the right job. Some of the equipment that you’ll need for your gardening include:
* Bypass pruners
* Hand rakes
* Soil-testing Ph level kits
* Transplanting trowels
* Watering cans
5. Add edible plants for variety.
