As a gardener, there are many things you should be doing before winter hits and as the winter begins. Here are some winter tips you need to remember as a gardener. Making gardening a family affair is always a good idea as well.
Top Gardening Advice for Growing Throughout the Winter Season
Tip #1 – Do you have any strawberry plants? After they go dormant during the winter, it is important that you mulch them. This way you keep them from getting any damage during the winter. This also helps you make sure you get berries that are cleaner when they produce again.
Tip #2 – As long as the ground has not frozen already, you can go ahead and plant your bulbs for spring. Often you can get some great sales late in the season and if you get these planted during the winter, you can have a beautiful landscape to look forward to in the spring. Successfully planting a winter garden is not that difficult, you can do this!
Tip #3 – Before the deep freezes set in during the winter, give any shrubs and evergreens a good watering at the roots. Trees that are thirsty during the winter are more likely to end up with winter damage. You can prevent that damage by doing a good watering.
Tip #4 – If you have ornamental grasses, wait until early spring or very late in the winter to cut them back. These grasses will provide great food sources for birds. The foliage will give you more interest in the garden and will bring in many birds to your garden area as well.
